BLÜCHER EuroPipe® at St James University Hospital, Leeds

BLÜCHER EuroPipe® for below ground installation at new Oncology Wing at St James’s University Hospital - Leeds.

Following on from its successful use in high profile hospital construction projects such as the Blackpool Coronary Care Unit, University College Hospital London, Burnley General and The Royal London, BLÜCHER has been awarded the contract to supply Heyrods in Leeds with BLÜCHER EuroPipe® for use in below ground drainage in the £220 million Oncology Wing at St James’s Hospital, Leeds.

This development, for which construction began in November 2004, illustrates the versatility and durability of the system, which is traditionally associated with above-ground installations.

The Oncology Wing at St James’s, which is a hospital within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, will be a new world class cancer diagnostic and treatment facility for the region with a floor space of 67000m2.

BLÜCHER EuroPipe® was selected Building and Civil Engineering Contractors Heyrod Construction Ltd. Spokeman Richard Bett commented: Being a PFI project meant there was to be a subsequent 30-year maintenance contract, to be managed by Bovis Lend Lease. For reasons of hygiene, the specification required a stainless steel drainage system, on this occasion below ground, with pipework encased in concrete.

Our need was to find a product, which could meet the long-term performance criteria and be supplied as a complete drainage system. BLÜCHER EuroPipe® was ideal for this type of installation and environment.

Its push-fit joints make it easy to install, yet it is sufficiently robust to convince us that performance over such a long design life will not be a problem. Advice from BLÜCHER’s Design Service has also been invaluable for critical issues such as performance of joint seals.
